I’m Judith Fetterley. I write about gardening to tell stories about being human.

Perennial Wisdom

To be a gardener is to have plans. You will see us in our gardens with our notebooks, writing furiously. Our plans, of course, are full of intention. We want our gardens to provide an oasis of calm in a chaotic world or to excite passion in a world we feel is dull. We want our gardens to introduce people to every ornamental grass that can be grown in our climate or to show visitors the power of simplicity by repeating the same grass throughout. I want my gardens to express energy and abundance, to give visitors the experience of enough, not just one pie and tiny pieces but a whole pie for everyone. Nature is prolific, I want my gardens to be like her.
